AWS vs Microsoft Azure: MCP servers compared
Which one works better with Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants? Here is what each vendor publishes, side by side, from our dated verdicts.
The short answer
- Both AWS and Microsoft Azure publish an official MCP server.
- AWS is listed as a Claude connector; the other is not.
- AWS's server is hosted, so there is nothing to install. The other runs differently.
- AWS documents more tools (8 vs 4 for Microsoft Azure).
- Safety flags to review: AWS 1, Microsoft Azure 1. See each verdict for details.
Side by side
| Detail | AWS | Microsoft Azure |
|---|---|---|
| Verdict | Official | Official |
| Claude connector | Yes | Not confirmed |
| Server | AWS MCP Server (managed) (Amazon Web Services) | Azure MCP Server (Microsoft) |
| How it runs | Hosted (remote URL) | Runs on your machine |
| Sign-in | OAuth sign-in | OAuth sign-in |
| Stage | Generally available | Unknown |
| Plan needed | No additional charge for the server itself; you pay for the AWS resources you use (AWS announcement). Needs an AWS account and IAM permissions for API calls. | Azure subscription. The Learn page says a GitHub Copilot subscription is needed in supported hosts. |
| Documented tools | 8 (5 read, 3 write) | 4 (3 read, 1 write) |
| Can delete data | No documented delete tools | No documented delete tools |
| Safety flags | aws___run_script and aws___call_aws can call AWS APIs, so write and delete power depends on the signed-in IAM principal. Read-only mode (hiding write-capable tools) is documented only for the SigV4 option; IAM policies or SCPs can also restrict it. | Can act on live cloud resources; docs include a "Permissions and Risk" warning about destructive actions. A --read-only flag exists but defaults to off. |

AWS verdict
As of October 2026, AWS publishes an official, managed remote MCP server at aws-mcp.us-east-1.api.aws/mcp, documented on docs.aws.amazon.com and listed in Anthropic's directory as Anthropic verified. Docs search needs no sign-in; AWS API calls use OAuth or SigV4 with your IAM permissions. Read-only mode requires the SigV4 proxy.
